Veterinary Department Conducts Categorization of Dairy Processing Facilities in Northern Cyprus
The Veterinary Department’s Public Health Unit, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has conducted official inspections of dairy processing facilities handling 2,000 liters or more of milk per day. These inspections, carried out in 2023 and 2024, aimed to assess compliance with hygiene and safety regulations.
Dairy Facility Categorization
Based on the inspection results, dairy processing facilities have been classified into four distinct categories:
- Category 1: Facilities that fully comply with TRNC laws and regulations, as well as EU requirements. These facilities are approved for operation.
- Category 2: Facilities with minor non-conformities that can be rectified within six months.
- Category 3: Facilities with significant deficiencies that require more than six months to resolve.
- Category 4: Facilities with major non-conformities that pose a risk to public health.
Inspection Criteria and Regulatory Compliance
The categorization process follows the Veterinary Services Law and the General and Specific Hygiene Rules Regulations for Animal-Based Food Enterprises. Key factors evaluated include general food hygiene criteria, compliance with HACCP principles, documentation accuracy, and traceability standards.
Enhancing Quality and Safety in Dairy Production
This classification system plays a crucial role in improving hygiene and quality standards within the dairy industry. Ensuring compliance with both local and EU regulations will not only enhance food safety but also support the sustainability and competitiveness of the dairy sector in Northern Cyprus.
With ongoing regulatory oversight, the Veterinary Department remains committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining high industry standards.
